What is the goat tickle torture?
“The soles of a victim’s feet were covered with a salt solution so that a goat, attracted by the salt, would lick it off with his rough tongue and continually tickle the skin. By so doing, the salty skin was gradually rasped away. Then, the wounded skin would again be covered with the biting salt solution — ad infinitum, till the victim died from the torture.”

The goat torture consists of exposing a part of the victim’s body, usually the feet, to the persistent licking of a goat, attracted to a surface coated with salty substances, such as water and salt. The goat’s rough tongue, combined with the sensitivity of the feet, caused an unbearable tickle. This continuous and unrelenting tickling could cause extreme discomfort and, in some cases, lead the prisoner to reveal information or confess to crimes.
From a physical perspective, prolonged tickling can lead to muscle spasms, fatigue, and a sense of helplessness. Psychologically, the inability to escape tickling can be heartbreaking, inducing uncontrollable laughter that brings no relief, but rather a growing sense of discomfort.

This practice is primarily referenced in the 1502 treatise “Tractatus de indiciis et tortura” by Italian jurist Franciscus Brunus de San Severino, who cautioned against torture in general. While Brunus did not invent the idea, it remains uncertain whether the method was ever actually employed or if it was based on hearsay or theoretical constructs.
There are no documented cases of the goat’s tongue torture being used in practice, despite its mention in historical texts. The mention of the goat’s tongue has appeared in various cultural contexts, but its practical application as a torture method is not substantiated by historical evidence. It serves more as an example of the absurdity of certain torture methods rather than a confirmed practice
